Spyware & Adware:

Spyware:
It is a type of software that secretly forwards information about a user to third parties without user’s consent. This information includes user’s online activities, files accessed on the computer etc.

Adware:
It is a type of software that displays advertising banners parallel to the running program. They first spy on and gather information from a user’s computer, and then popup an advertising banner related to the searched information.

A system with spyware / adware installed may shows the following symptoms:-

  • The default start page of the web browser is changed to another website. The user cannot undo the changes back to original, and these hijackers force the user to visit the unwanted websites
  • Pop-up windows with advertisements open on the screen even
  • New software components are being installed, such as browsers toolbar.

Tips to prevent these attacks :-

  • Do not download / install software from suspicious websites.
  • Read the terms and conditions of use carefully, because they fool you to accept that an adware or spyware system may installed.
  • Read the terms of use carefully when you are asked to install a plug-in.
  • Install anti-spyware and anti-adware software.

Trojan Horses:-

It is a non-replicating programthat appears authorized, but actually performs malicious activities when executed. Attackers use these types of malicious program to steal a user's credentials, or they may simply destroy programs.

It is hard to detect because it is designed to conceal its presence by performing its functions properly.

Tips for Prevention:-

  • Install a file integrity checker.
  • Be attentive to suspicious hard disk activity e.g. if your hard disk access LED light is always on.
  • Be attentive to suspicious deletion or modification of files.
  • Check if your system is accessed without your permission, e.g. your email accounts.

Worms:-Worms are self-replicating program that does not need to attach to a host file. Unlike viruses, worms are self-executive. They have the ability to spread over a network and can initiate destructive attacks in a short period of time.

Some typical examples of a massive attack causes network outages are:

  • Canceled airline flights
  • Interference with elections
  • Bank ATM failures
