URL Alias in Drupal- User understandable names URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, which means it uniformly locates your resource present on the internet. It is a unique name which identifies your page or resource. Example of URL: Where,

  • http is a protocol.
  • www is a subdomain.
  • com is a domain
  • Blog/all blogs are directories.

If there is a URL like, a person will not be able to understand as where this URL is redirecting you. It means there should be a URL which is more understandable to users, so that, when they will see the URL it could be easy for them to know like yes this page is taking me to blog section or store section, etc. Drupal uses nodes to identify its pages. But after creating a site on Drupal, if a user wants to go to About us page, he will click on the button and URL will be shown as something So, it will be bit confusing. Instead of that by using URL-Alias we can change this node 20 to about us. URL alias doesn’t affect any browser, search engines, etc. But just for humans understanding it should be necessary. URL alias also helps when creating SEO-friendly sites and gives you clean URL’s. Easy steps to setup URL-Aliases in Drupal 7:

  1. Login into your Drupal 7.
  2. Go to modules>> search path auto module>> enable the module. Save it.
  3. Go to Configuration>> URL Aliases.
