CSS STANDARDS

CSS standards are followed in world for efficiency of code. Following are the most compelling reasons for using CSS and HTML over outdated methods:

1.   Efficiency of code: The greater your files are, the more time they will take to download, and the more they will cost some people to view (some people still pay money for downloads by the megabyte.) Hence some people don’t want to waste there bandwidth on large pages cluttered up with styling and layout information in every HTML file. A much better solution is to make the HTML files clean and neat, and include the code in separate css files.

  1. Easiness for maintenance: If your styling and layout code is only specified at one  place, it means you only have to make updates in one place. If you want to change your site’s appearance.

2. Device compatibility: HTML/XHTML page is only plain markup, with no styling, it can be modified for different devices with vastly differing in attributes e.g.screen size. By simply including an external style sheet — you can perform this in a different ways.

Web crawlers/search engines:. A search engine takes help of  a “crawler”, which is a specialized software, to see into your pages. If the crawler has trouble in finding the content of your pages, or mis-guides what’s important because you did not defined headings as headings and so on, then your rankings will go down.

What is XHTML?

HTML is the older web language, and is famous one you'll heard from everywhere.  XHTML on the other hand is a restructuring of HTML as an XML vocabulary. XML is a separate markup language with much tough syntax rules. To differentiate between XHTML and HTML doesn't matter so much, unless you find youself working in a web team in the future that has coding guidelines that favour one style or another. If you are using HTML5, which we will be doing throughout this course, then you are free to use HTML or XHTML syntax. Choose whatever you are most comfortable with, as long as you stick to the best practices outlined in the course.

What is CSS?

Cascading Style Sheets shows control over the formatting and layout of your website. CSS works on a structure of rules, which picks up the elements you want to style, and then assign values for different properties of the elements. You can change or visual properties on your web page in different places. Here is an example CSS:

.h1 {

   line-height: 2;

   color: green;

 }

Hence we can use CSS in different formats easily and with simplicity in our designs.
